Kate Iuele - Team "Lady May"
In July 2023, after a series of medical issues, I was hospitalized and after an MRI they found a mass in my pituitary gland. One month later I had a transsphenoidal (through the nasal passage way) surgery to remove the mass in the posterior part of my pituitary gland. Post surgery, I was diagnosed with a Craniopharyngioma brain tumor. After my recovery, we followed up with Memorial Sloan Kettering for the potential of radiation and future treatment, but after running a full pathology on the specimen removed during my surgery, they found no tumor cells and re-diagnosed me with a Rathke Cleft Cyst 3 days before Christmas. What a gift! Although we are not out of the woods because there is a potential for the RCC to grow back, and I have permanent endocrine system damage (diabetes insipidus), I continue my DDAVP medication to manage my daily symptoms, but I can’t help but feel grateful for this better outcome of a diagnosis.
This will be my first “Go Grey in May” for Brain Tumor awareness month since my surgery and diagnosis. I wanted to make it a point to continue to support the brain tumor community that has supported me throughout my journey through many support groups and people/families I have talked to along the way. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for myself, my family and friends this past year. I have the gift of life and generally feeling ok as the days progress and that is the best gift of all. I will have my follow up MRI in June/July to check if there has been any regrowth since surgery. Pray nothing grows back! I chose the name Lady May because my birthday is in the month of May and it is one of my/my husbands favorite Tyler Childer’s songs, that always makes him think of me and since May is brain tumor awareness month, it just felt right.
I plan to continue to raise awareness for all the people and their loved ones who suffer from brain tumors/cysts of all kinds and plan to keep team Lady May going grey in years to come.
