I have registered to fundraise for the National Brain Tumor Society's (NBTS) Race for Hope-DC on May 1st because I am passionate about the NBTS mission to conquer and cure brain tumors — once and for all.
My husband, Jeff Stahl, was diagnosed in 2001 at age 29 with anaplastic astrocytoma. After undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, he was in remission for 12 years before the cancer recurred in 2014. Again, he underwent radiation and chemotherapy and the tumor stopped growing. Within six months, another tumor was diagnosed on 27 August 2016, this one was believed to be glioblastoma. With no other effective chemotherapy treatments available to him, he opted for immunotherapy which seemed to work for a period of time.. until it didn't. Maybe it was the side effects of the medications. Maybe it was the cancer itself. But it definitely wasn't because he gave up.
I have been fundraising for this organization since his passing on 26 August 2017 at age 45 because no more families should have to endure what brain cancer does to their loved ones. Every year 15,000 people are diagnosed with glioblastoma. It crosses all ages, races, ethnicities, genders. The average survival time is 12-18 months with only 25% of patients surviving more than a year, and 5% surviving five years. Please help us find a cure for this devastating disease.
