Ann and Sheldon 2011 Race
Ann and Sheldon 2011 Race

My family has participated in Race for Hope DC for more than 10 years.  Our team, Sheldon's Shteibel was formed after Sheldon's diagnosis with a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor.  Sheldon passed away on October 21, 2012 after living with this cancer for 34 months, way longer than the average GBM patient.  Sheldon was only 58 years old.  The GBM robbed our family of Sheldon's love and presence way too soon.  Sheldon had a large personality and was a ready friend.  He used his last months and weeks to study Torah, see friends and to share the Jewish New Year with family. Sheldon was under hospice care and died at home, surrounded by close family.

Sheldon was under the care of wonderful doctors and nurses at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He had two brain surgeries, and several rounds of chemotherapy treatments, including two clinical trials (one at Hopkins and one at NIH). Sheldon benefitted from one of those trials.  Although our participation in this race no longer benefits Sheldon, we are hopeful that our efforts will bring more trials and more hope to other brain tumor patients and their families. Please join us in our efforts by donating to our team or by joining us in DC as a walker or runner.  The course is level and beautiful, with the Capital as a backdrop.  The race is in the morning and you can return home or spend the day in DC.

I will be running this race as a timed runner.  I began running after Sheldon's diagnosis and have found it to be theraputic through all these years.  My personal goal used to be to finish in 36 minutes or less, but now I hope I can finish in 39 minutes.  Please support my efforts by sponsoring my participation.

On behalf of Sheldon's family, we thank everyone for the care and support extended to our family during Sheldon's illness, particularly during the last difficult months, and for the out reach to all of us as we adjust to our life without husband, son, father, grandfather and friend.

Ann
