OUR WHY
We raced our first year in an early and intense phase of treatment. The race gave us all something to look forward to and a reason to take daily walks in preparation. We benefited from the encouragement of our support system and the larger brain tumor community. Since then, we have met so many people who are living through, knowing, or supporting someone who was or is going through the same journey.
We race to raise awareness and fundraise for continued research. Nine years after Ryan’s diagnosis, advances in genetic testing allowed Ryan’s original tumor tissue to be re-examined and for us to learn more about the composition of his resected tumor. We race to improve outcomes for initial diagnoses, recurrences, and to benefit all impacted by brain tumors: patients, survivors, caregivers, family, and friends. For us, family now includes young boys for whom the race exemplifies the power of community for anyone met with the uncertainty of a brain tumor diagnosis.
TEAM KICK ASTROCYTOMA
Team Kick Astrocytoma is participating in the Race for Hope for the 14th time this year. Our team was formed in 2011 after Ryan was diagnosed with a gemistocytic astrocytoma on his right frontal lobe at the age of 26. Ryan's treatment course included multiple surgeries (several due to infection complications) and radiation with low dose chemotherapy followed by eleven monthly cycles of chemotherapy.
We are so grateful for your support of our family and for investing in the research that has lead to and will continue to enhance treatment for everyone affected by brain tumors.
National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding a cure for brain tumors. They are aggressively driving strategic research; advocating for public policies that meet the critical needs of the brain tumor community; and providing comprehensive patient, family and caregiver resources. Your support ensures this important work will continue.
