Race For Hope DC

Team Scatterbrains

Team Scatterbrains is celebrating its 20th year participating in the Race for Hope!

Join Team Scatterbrains as we raise money to find a CURE for brain tumors.

Team Scatterbrains is a team of brain tumor survivors!

Barbara Purcell and Linda Morison are once again co-captains of Team Scatterbrains. Barbara and Linda are brain tumor survivors and are both patients of Dr. Jon Weingart.  Linda had already had 2 surgeries performed by Dr. Weingart (visit Linda's Race page for the details) when she received a frantic phone call from Patty (her sister-in-law) asking for Dr. Weingart's phone number.  Over the years, Linda had referred many people to Dr. Weingart.  However, this request seemed more frantic.  It was for Barbara.  Barbara's kids and Patty's daughters (Linda's favorite (only) nieces) attended St. John's Regional Catholic School in Frederick.  Barbara had been having severe headaches which were finally diagnosed as brain tumor.  Barbara met with Dr. Weingart and surgery was scheduled.  Of course, the surgery had to be schedule after her band performed at a fundraising event!

Linda Falco is also a brain tumor survivor.  And, she is also a member of the St. John's family.  It is truly a small world.  Once you have been diagnosed with a brain tumor, you hear countless stories of friends and families that have been touched by this horrific condition.

For Linda Morison it was 1993 (and then again in 2000), for Linda Falco, 2002 and for Barbara Purcell 2003 (and then again in 2008 and AGAIN in 2011 and AGAIN in 2016!), when they each faced the news that the accumulation of symptoms long dismissed would not be ignored. You never forget the moment when you look into the face of a concerned physician using the words "Brain Tumor" and realize that they are speaking directly to you alone. Each of us knows precisely where we were, what time of day it was, the weather and that feeling of Now What?

We are truly the "lucky ones".  Thanks to medical research, advances in surgical techniques and fantastic doctors, we have "survived".  But too many people don't survive.  Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer related deaths in children (ages 19 and under).  We all know that at any routine checkup, you can hear the dreadful words that "there has been a change".  And you know that the tumor is back.

Please join Team Scatterbrains as we try to reach this year's fundraising goal of $5000.

Please support our efforts by registering to join our team or consider making a donation to one of our team member's fundraising efforts. While we continue to navigate living in a virtual space, we are reminded of the benefit it provides; YOU can support this year's event and take part in Race for Hope DC on May 5th in person or virtually from anywhere in the world! So, please join Team Scatterbrains and the National Brain Tumor Society in conquering and curing brain tumors!
