Southern California Brain Tumor Walk & Race

Double Trouble

Hey Folks!

Rob Ryan here. As some of you may or may not know, I have had my life impacted by not one, but two brain tumors in the last 4 years.

At the end of 2019, my mom was functioning like any normal woman. In January 2020, she ended up in the ER after a collapse and we awaited test results to say something like "You had a stoke". Something super common. We never expected to have that moment you see on TV where the doctor comes in and says "You have a tumor pressing on the brain and we need to do surgery to remove it"

We started exploring our options and navigating the healthcare industry. During this time, the world got struck with Covid-19 which shutdown the hospitals and therefore all surgeries and resources were place on indefinite holds. From January to June, we were in limbo trying to get approvals, bypass red tape and get the treatment my mother desperately needed.

In the 5 months we were forced to wait for surgery my mother quickly declined and became paralyzed on the entire right side of her body. First it was her (dominant) hand, then her arm / shoulder and lastly her leg. She no longer could walk on her own. She needed help getting into bed, cutting her food, writing things down and more.

Thankfully we were able to get a surgery for the primary tumor in June of 2020. Then we began the journey of recovery as I cared for her and had to help her with physical therapy, post-op care and accepting our new normal. After my mom was stabilized and functioning, we entered surgery #2 during Christmas of 2021. Smaller tumor, same gameplan. Rinse and repeat.

Now, my mom is mostly back to the amazing woman she is with some slight adjustments, and I am now shifting my attention to helping raise money for the National Brain Tumor Society which is committed to defeating brain tumors and improving the quality of patients’ lives. NBTS unrelentingly invest in, mobilize, and unite the brain tumor community to discover a cure, deliver effective treatments, and advocate for patients and caregivers.

Any dollar amount you can give, and it greatly appreciated.
