About the National Brain Tumor Society:

National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow. This means effecting change in the system at all levels.

For more information about the National Brain Tumor Society, visit http://www.braintumor.org/.

My name is Brooke Howitt, and currently I’m a Fellow in Women’s and Perinatal Pathology. Before that I completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology here at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In July, I will be coming on at staff here in the BWH Pathology Department and as Instructor at Harvard Medical School.

From my career perspective I have a connection to the brain tumor cause; even though I am not a neuropathologist, as part of our training in pathology we do a significant amount of work in Neuropathology so from that standpoint I’m very familiar with all the types of brain tumors, and although I never took care of a patient face to face I still “cared” for patients with brain tumors, behind the scenes (as most pathologists usually are). I’ve performed multiple autopsies on patients who unfortunately lost the fight against their brain tumor, but have also seen how our advances in understanding the molecular underpinnings of disease have led to advances in pathophysiology and guided treatment decisions.

From a personal perspective, I have known people with brain tumors- a former teacher and a friend. Although I am happy to report that these people are currently alive and well, I know from my job how devastating brain tumors can be, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon while helping to raise awareness and funds for this cause!

I have never run the Boston marathon before, but it has been on my to-do list! I have run a handful of marathons back in California, many half marathons, countless 10k’s and 5k’s and other shorter races. I ran cross country and track at Washington University in St. Louis (mainly 5k and 10k; cross country was 6k), and after I graduated from college I started running marathons and half marathons for fun. In college, running was my life- I lived and breathed the sport, my teammates and my coach were incredibly important to me and continue to influence my life today. Although I’ve slowed down a bit on the running and am focusing more on my academic career now, I will always be a runner at heart!

Although our fundraising goal is $5,000, I’m hoping to surpass that goal!

Please join me in the fight against brain tumors by making a donation to my fundraising campaign to support the National Brain Tumor Society.
